Our banner responds to issues that concern women today and supports Ann Pincus who organises The Refugee Tales and the walking campaign demanding an end to the practice of unlimited detention for asylum seekers in the U.K. Anna’s work was also recently highlighted: https://www.amnesty.org.uk/suffragettespirit.
The group Thread and Word has used walking and textiles to bring together people who welcome the opportunity to take part in collaborative events highlighting social issues and sharing stories.
Ideas for the banner at Processions 2018 can be seen in the collage of images.
The group started preparing the work on the banner in February 2018. At present, there are individual artists and community groups contributing to the project from Edinburgh, Nottingham and London, including the Garden Gate Project in Margate and the Work and Play Scrapstore in Tooting.
We will be hosting participatory sewing events to prepare for our banner. These events invite contribution from the public and include, the Wandsworth Arts Fringe, Hazelfest Tooting and the Hammersmith and Fulham Arts Fest.
The banner will be assembled at the Work and Play Scrapstore during a workshop in May and will be supported by community members from the Hazelhurst estate, where the Scrapstore is located.
