As part of the PROCESSIONS ‘100 Years 100 Banners’ programme, Somerset Artworks have teamed with textile artist Dorcas Casey to facilitate banner workshops in Somerset colleges.

Dorcas Casey is a mixed media sculptor who exhibited at Glastonbury 2016, had works at Banksy’s DISMALAND and most recently displayed a crocodile sculpture as part of Muse: Makers in Museums exhibition with seven other artists.

During the first workshop, Dorcas presented an introduction to her work and a history of the suffrage movement. They then moved on to some creative tasks including creating slogans for pennant banners and badges.  Many of the attendees were textile students who were interested in the fabrics that Docas had brought and creating their own unique banners.

Creations that emerged from the workshop were badges designed with Emmeline Pankhurst’s face and others that expressed participants views about women’s rights We are excited to see how these banners and badges turn out in the lead up to PROCESSIONS on the 10th June. Why not make your own banner or flag using our toolkit here.
